Overview

The Walnut Shell Media Filter is a high-performance deep bed filtration system designed for industrial water and wastewater applications involving oily process water and suspended solids. It delivers reliable, reusable water quality, operates with over 99% uptime, and uses a patented backwashing and media scrubbing process to regenerate the filter bed efficiently without chemicals, surfactants, or air sparging cycles.

Benefits

  • High Removal Efficiency: Removes 95% to 99% of suspended solids and 90% to 99% of insoluble hydrocarbons.
  • Chemical-Free Operation: Requires no chemicals, no surfactants, and no air sparging during regeneration.
  • Lower Water Usage: Uses significantly less backwash water than sand or anthracite filters.
  • Long Media Life:Black walnut shell media has a very low attrition rate and is designed to last for the filter’s lifetime.
  • Compact Footprint: Higher flux rates allow smaller filter housings and better use of plant floor space.
  • Low Maintenance: Automatic patented backwashing system simplifies operation and reduces maintenance burden.

Key Features

The Walnut Shell Media Filter uses a patented rotating media scrubbing assembly and automatic backwashing system to fully regenerate the media bed during each cleaning cycle. The system is designed for high-volume industrial service, offers superior filtration of oil and solids, and provides a durable, skid-mounted solution for fast installation and long-term operation.

Operating Principle

As contaminated water passes through the walnut shell media bed, suspended solids and oil droplets are retained within the media. When the bed becomes loaded, an automatic patented backwashing cycle is triggered by differential pressure or preset timing. During backwash, a rotating scrubbing assembly fluidizes and cleans the media, fully regenerating it for continued filtration service.

Other Details

Compared with sand or anthracite filters, walnut shell media filters offer higher throughput, lower backwash water consumption, and better performance in oily water applications. The system is particularly well suited for produced water, groundwater treatment, cooling water recycling, and process water reuse.
